What is Sedation Dentistry?
Serving Northern Virginia including Oakton, Fairfax, Reston, Alexandria, Arlington and Washington D.C.
Sedation dentistry is the use of medication to relax you during a dental procedure. Dentists using sedation must receive specialized training. Dr. Chung has received training in sedation dentistry and offers it for use with a variety of dental procedures ranging from more routine appointments to the specific needs of cosmetic dentistry.
Choosing Sedation Dentistry for Your Procedure
Sedation dentistry is effective, efficient, and medically safe. Many of our patients may choose sedation dentistry because they have a strong phobia to dental work, but feel able to return to the dentist even after years of neglect. Patients suffering from medical conditions that prohibit good dental work also find benefit in sedation dentistry.
You may hear it referred to as sleep dentistry but you remain awake and able to communicate with Dr. Chung. We may use nitrous oxide or oral sedation, depending on what fits your unique circumstances. An experienced dental team is at your side through the entire process.
Your experience will be similar to the feeling of falling asleep but only progresses to a deep relaxation. Sedation can be maintained at different levels. You will experience a progressive relaxation that can result in:
- Going in and out of consciousness
- A floating sensation over your entire body
- Feeling conscious but carefree
Patient Comfort during Sedation Dentistry
Our dental team closely monitors your level of sedation to maintain the balance between relaxation and alertness. Sedation can be coupled with our other amenities such as warm blankets, streaming music, and virtual reality movies. Some benefits include:
- Relaxed facial muscles leading to less post-operative discomfort
- Dental procedure seems to be over quickly
- Little memory of what you experienced in the dentist’s chair
We intentionally limit the number of patients seen a day to two or three in the interest of providing you with the best service. More time with each patient guarantees our full attention to your needs.
