What is dental bonding?
It’s the use of a substance called dental bonding to correct minor tooth defects. The substance is white and pliable, and Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Chung applies it directly to the tooth being treated in such a way that the defect is either hidden or corrected. It’s a quick and easy procedure.
What dental problems does dental bonding correct?
It can address many problems as long as they are not too severe.
- Slight crookedness or misalignment
- Surface cracks and small chips
- Small gaps between front teeth
- Discoloration that has not responded to a tooth whitening procedure
How is dental bonding done?
Dr. Chung applies the bonding a little at a time until the gap is filled, or the chip, or until the slight crookedness is straightened. A crooked tooth is not actually moved into a straight position – the bonding is applied to it such that the crookedness is covered, and the tooth has a new front surface.
- When both you and Dr. Chung are satisfied that the defect is corrected, he will use a curing light to harden the bonding.
- He will then smooth and polish it to match the adjacent teeth and blend in nicely for your smile.
Does dental bonding hurt?
No. No drilling is necessary. The bonding is applied to the tooth’s surface, so the nerve is never involved. No anesthetic is usually needed, although if you have extra anxiety about visiting a dentist, we will be glad to give a local anesthetic and a mild sedative to help you relax.
Is dental bonding a good option for me?
It could well be, if you have dental problems which are relatively minor. One dental bonding procedure can correct multiple problems quickly and easily. If your teeth are too misaligned and crowded though, you might need an Invisalign® procedure to straighten them. Or porcelain veneers might be a better option for front teeth.
