Misshapen teeth do not only look unattractive, they can be detrimental to the function of your overall oral health. There are several cosmetic dental options to address misshapen teeth, based on the severity of your condition.

Dental Bonding

If you have a few teeth that are moderately misshapen, dental bonding can be used to alter the appearance of your smile. The bonding procedure utilizes a composite resin that is applied to the surface of your misshapen tooth, and matched exactly to the color of that tooth. The bonding material is hardened with a special light source and carefully shaped so that your crooked tooth looks straight and attractive.

Porcelain Veneers

If your misshapen tooth is more severe, porcelain veneers can be placed over top of your crooked tooth to create an aesthetically-pleasing appearance. Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin shells of durable porcelain that are permanently bonded to your tooth.

Your natural, misshaped tooth will be prepared, or slightly shaved down so that the veneers will fit securely in place. A mold will be taken of the crooked tooth, and your veneer will be created in a dental laboratory. Northern Virginia cosmetic dentist Dr. Michael Chung will then place the new porcelain veneer over your tooth, make sure it fits properly, and then permanently bond the veneer into place.

Braces and Invisalign®

If your teeth are overcrowded, which causes them to be crooked; this problem can be addressed with orthodontics. You can opt for traditional metal braces or new clear braces that will move your teeth into place by their roots by applying a constant pressure.

Another option is Invisalign®, which is a series of clear, plastic aligners that fit over your natural teeth, and also straightens them with pressure. These removable trays are custom-fitted to your mouth and ideal for adults and patients who do not want the look of wires and brackets. Each plastic aligner is worn for two weeks and removed only to eat, floss and brush.

Because of its innovative design, Invisalign® will straighten your teeth in less time than traditional braces, and do not involve the tightening of wires so you will spend less time at Softouch Dental Care.
